🌱 What to feed
Feed nitrogen and potassium through the growing season. The best programs are built on soil and leaf tests and your target yield, not guesswork — citrus commonly need eight or more of the thirteen essential nutrients topped up.
Trace elements are usually applied as a foliar spray on the spring flush. Zinc (and manganese if also short) is sprayed when the new spring leaves are about two-thirds their full size. For magnesium, a spring spray of calcium nitrate + magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) with a wetter/white oil is used around October–November. Always follow the product label rate.

Simple overview
Citrus are long-term fruit trees (orange, mandarin, lemon, lime, grapefruit). They grow well in the Top End and Katherine, but a citrus tree is a multi-year commitment, not a quick crop — grafted trees usually take about 2–3 years before they start cropping. The biggest beginner risks in the wet tropics are wet feet (root and collar rot) and trace-element hunger (especially zinc).
Best climate
Suited to Darwin and Katherine. Grapefruit (Ray and Henderson) are the most productive types grown in the NT; for lemons, Eureka and Lisbon are the main varieties, with Lisbon doing better in drier areas. Citrus are sensitive to root disease under warm, wet, humid monsoon conditions.
Best season (Darwin / NT)
Plant young trees so they establish before heavy monsoon rain, and pick a spot with excellent drainage. In Darwin and Katherine the main fruiting period is mid-February to the end of April. Soil and beds
Give citrus deep, free-draining soil. Plant the graft union well above soil level and keep mulch off the trunk. On heavier ground, plant on a raised mound and dig drains so water runs away from the tree.
Drainage
Needs excellent drainage — does not like wet feet. Roots or the crown must not stay wet for more than a few hours, or Phytophthora root and collar rot sets in.
Water
Water regularly and deeply, but never let the root zone stay waterlogged. Even, consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development gives better fruit.

Diseases in plain words
The big one in the wet tropics is Phytophthora root and collar rot from poor drainage. Melanose (a wet-weather fungus) spots leaves and fruit. Sooty mould grows on insect honeydew. Citrus canker and citrus greening (HLB) are serious biosecurity diseases — if you suspect them, report to NT biosecurity, do not just spray.

Harvest quality problems
Pick when fruit is fully coloured and tastes sweet — citrus does not ripen further off the tree. Cut or clip fruit rather than pulling, to avoid tearing the skin (which lets rots in). Sooty mould on the skin usually means a sap-sucking pest above it.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Planting in a low, wet, or heavy spot with poor drainage
- Planting the graft union too low / piling mulch against the trunk
- Ignoring trace elements (zinc especially) until the tree is stunted
- Overwatering — keeping the root zone constantly soggy
- Spraying a suspected biosecurity disease instead of reporting it
- Expecting fruit in the first year — citrus takes 2–3 years
