Simple overview
Mango is the Top End's signature tree crop. Kensington Pride (KP) is by far the main Australian variety (~90% of the crop); elephant/other types are also grown. Mangoes grow well around Darwin and Katherine, but the two classic Top End headaches are trees that grow too vigorously and flowering that is unreliable — which is why growers manage canopy size and sometimes use flowering aids. This pack is practical for a beginner but keeps the technical grower detail in the Advanced view.
Best climate
Loves hot tropical conditions. In warm, humid Top End weather Kensington Pride can flower and fruit unreliably, so canopy management and flowering timing matter. Not frost tolerant.
Best season (Darwin / NT)
Mangoes are grown throughout the Darwin and Katherine regions. Establish young trees so they settle before the wet season, in a well-drained spot. (Confirm the best local planting month with your nursery and the NT mango extension pages.)
Soil and beds
Deep, free-draining soil is best. Mango dislikes waterlogging; on heavier ground plant on a mound and keep the root zone from sitting wet.
Drainage
Needs good drainage. Waterlogged roots stress the tree and worsen root and trunk disease.
Water
Water to establish young trees and through fruit development. Many growers deliberately ease off water before flowering to help the tree switch from growing to flowering — get local advice on timing.

Leafhoppers and fruit fly are the big commercial ones.
Diseases in plain words
Anthracnose is the number-one wet-season disease — black spots on leaves, flowers and fruit, worst in humid, rainy weather (about 24–32 °C). Bacterial black spot, mango scab, powdery mildew and stem-end rot also occur. Sapburn (skin damage from the fruit's own sap at picking) is a quality problem managed at harvest, not a disease.

Harvest quality problems
Harvest maturity is judged by dry matter, flesh colour and the sinker test — not by skin colour alone. Australian guidance: dry matter rises about 0.72%/week from ~11% (stone hardening) to ~22% (full maturity); KP/Calypso are picked when about 90% of fruit are ≥15% dry matter (mean ~16.5%). Sinker test: in a 1.0% salt solution (100 g salt / 10 L), if 9 of 12 random fruit sink they are ready. Cut a sample — flesh should be turning lemon-yellow near the stone. Pick and de-sap in the MORNING to reduce sapburn (sap from the broken stem burns the skin).
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Letting trees grow too big and shady (hurts flowering and spraying)
- Expecting reliable flowering without managing canopy/timing
- Judging ripeness by skin colour instead of dry matter / sinker test
- Harvesting in the heat of the day (more sapburn)
- Skipping anthracnose protection through the wet
- Using growth regulators (PBZ/KNO3) by guesswork instead of the label/permit
