What makes this crop thrive?

🌞 What this crop likes

  • Likes hot weather
  • Needs good drainage — does not like wet feet
  • Needs steady, even water while podding
  • Modest nitrogen, more potassium and calcium for pods
  • Needs regular picking (every 1–2 days)

⚠️ What can go wrong

  • Watch for aphids
  • Watch for two-spotted mites in hot dry spells
  • Root rot / nematodes in wet, poorly drained soil
  • Pods turning tough if picked too late
  • Too much nitrogen = all leaf, few pods

📋 What to check this week

  • Check undersides of leaves for aphids and mites
  • Check drainage after heavy rain
  • Pick all pods at 5–8 cm
  • Look for yellowing (feed) or wilting (roots/water)
  • Note anything unusual in farm notes

🌱 What to feed

Do not overdo nitrogen early — too much makes leafy plants with few pods. A balanced feed at planting, then side-dress with calcium nitrate as pods start (Clemson: 3–6 lb of 15.5-0-0 calcium nitrate per 1,000 sq ft at 3–4 and 6–8 weeks). Use the Fertilizer Library goal shortcuts for the actual products.
Foliar calcium and boron are commonly used around flowering/fruit set — confirm rates on the product label.

🐛 What pests to look for

  • Aphids
  • Two-spotted mites
  • Whiteflies
  • Stink bugs / leaf-footed bugs

🧺 When to harvest

First harvest: 55–70 days from planting.
Then: Pick every 1–2 days — pods get tough fast and the plant slows if you miss picks.

Simple overview

Okra is a fast, heat-loving crop grown for its young pods. It suits the Darwin build-up and wet season when many other vegetables struggle with heat. Easy for beginners, but the pods must be picked very often or the plant stops producing.

Best climate

Loves hot weather. A true tropical/subtropical crop — it grows best in warm, humid conditions and is not frost tolerant. Good fit for the Top End's hot months.

Best season (Darwin / NT)

Darwin/Katherine: okra is a warm-season sowing suited to the hotter part of the year (the build-up/wet, roughly Sep–Mar). Confirm the exact month against the NT DAF Darwin & Katherine vegetable sowing calendar before you commit.

Soil and beds

Likes free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Raised beds help in the wet season.

Drainage

Needs good drainage — does not like wet feet, especially in the wet season.

Water

Regular, even watering while flowering and podding. Avoid waterlogging.

Feeding (fertigation)

Do not overdo nitrogen early — too much makes leafy plants with few pods. A balanced feed at planting, then side-dress with calcium nitrate as pods start (Clemson: 3–6 lb of 15.5-0-0 calcium nitrate per 1,000 sq ft at 3–4 and 6–8 weeks). Use the Fertilizer Library goal shortcuts for the actual products.

Foliar feeding

Foliar calcium and boron are commonly used around flowering/fruit set — confirm rates on the product label.

Most important nutrients

Potassium and calcium for pods; steady but modest nitrogen.

Common deficiencies

Calcium (poor pod quality), boron (poor fruit set).

Pests in plain words

Watch for aphids, and for two-spotted mites in hot dry spells. Also stink bugs and leaf-footed bugs on pods.

Diseases in plain words

Root-rot and root-knot nematodes are the main worries in warm wet soil. Pick a well-drained spot and rotate.

Spacing and plant numbers

Plant spacing: 23–30 cm   Row spacing: 90–120 cm

At 27 cm spacing that is about 370 plants per 100 m row.

Plant count calculator

Harvest quality problems

Pick pods at 5–8 cm (about 2–3 inches). Bigger pods turn tough and stringy and lose value. Wear long sleeves — the pods and leaves can irritate skin.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Planting in a spot that stays wet
  • Feeding too much nitrogen early
  • Not picking often enough
  • Letting pods grow too big before picking
  • Not wearing sleeves/gloves when picking (skin irritation)

Scouting checklist

  • Aphids on new growth
  • Fine webbing / speckling = two-spotted mites
  • Chewed pods = stink/leaf-footed bugs
  • Wilting plants = check roots for knots/rot
  • Powdery white patches on leaves
